Gastric Reflux

To reduce gastric reflux, experts recommend three types of treatments:

Postural and dietary therapy.

a) Posture and general

Do not lie down after eating and wait two or three hours before going to sleep after dinner.
Elevating the head of the bed 8 to 10 cm.
Losing weight.
Quit.
Avoid tight clothing or belt too tight.
Avoid overeating, and instead, seek lighter and more frequent meals throughout the day.
Avoid, as far as possible, aspirin and most pain medications.

b) Dietary Guidelines

Intakes of low volume and high frequency. 5 meals a day is a good idea: breakfast, mid morning, lunch, snack during the afternoon and dinner, it is advisable to be at least 2 hours before bedtime.

Rice and bread, beans, and tofu (bean curd) can be a good help to reduce the acid, and they are soft foods.
Do not overdo it, because too much of any food can turn stimulate acid production.

Eliminate foods that decrease lower esophageal sphincter pressure: alcohol, tomatoes (especially tomato paste), garlic, onions, chocolate, fats,
fermented cheese and very cured, sparkling drinks (soft drinks, champagne or white wine).

The food temperatures are important. Excessive heat or cold irritate the gastric mucosa. It is advisable to eat them warm.

Foods to avoid: citrus juices, vinegar, tomato products, pepper, mustard, some whole grains or melon
cucumber, pepper.

Raw fruits and vegetables should be peeled and seeded.

The meat should not be overcooked, and cook on the grill, toast crust is irritating. Preferred are boiled meat. Fried foods are generally discouraged and very composite meals and spicy.
White meats are less irritating than red, as they are more easily digestible and less time remaining in the stomach.

Milk, which has been a mainstay of treatment actually stimulates gastric acid secretion. There should be eliminated from the diet,
but it is advised to consume the Lactose-Free.

Physical activity should not be excessive. Avoid sports that involve physical effort too intense

c) Drugs

Finally, the physician should advise the use or nonuse of medications such as antacids common, H2 blockers, inhibitors of proton pump, etc..

The treatment is based on:

1) Drugs that block the production of stomach acid, such as:

a) H2 receptor antagonists such as ranitidine and others.
b) Inhibitors of proton pump as omeprazole and others of the same family.

2) Drugs that increase the strength of the lower esophageal sphincter.

Herbs that may be helpful:

Licorice: Licorice, particularly chewable licorice without glycyrrhizin (DGL), has proven an effective treatment to cure stomach and duodenal ulcers, but there have been no studies of licorice in connection with the RGE.

Ginger: Actually serve. Unlike drugs, no side effects or even drowsiness because his course of action is the nervous system. It is also an excellent remedy for nausea, in powder, biscuits or drink (ginger ale).

Dietary changes that may be beneficial
Eating foods or drinks with spearmint, peppermint or any other spices with strong aromatic oils causes relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and may contribute to symptoms in people with GERD. Chocolate also relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter and cause heartburn. Acidic beverages like juices, coffee and tea, as well as carbonated drinks, alcohol and milk, have also been associated with an increase in pain accompanied by heartburn.

Low-fat diet: It is unclear whether reducing fat intake in the diet is important in patients with GERD. It has always been recommended to patients with this disease to observe a low fat diet because fatty foods seem to be associated with an increase in acidity and because we have seen that fatty foods weaken the lower esophageal sphincter in both healthy people and in those with GERD.

Cow’s milk: Babies who suffer from GERD may be allergic to cow’s milk. Some small studies estimate that milk allergy was the cause of GERD by about 20% of children with this problem, but a larger study with 204 infants with GER, diagnosed allergy to cow’s milk in the 41%. In these infants, reflux symptoms improved diet to eliminate dairy products.

This problem known as esophagitis usually requires medical treatment.

Only a fraction of people with this condition require surgery for their disease.
